Ford AOD Transmissions: Rebuilding and Modifying the AOD, AODE and 4R70W (SA Design Workbench How-To) Paperback – June 12, 2014

I really like this book. I found this when I was looking for resources to rebuild my own transmission but it wasn't yet available. I purchased the tech manual for the AOD/AODE transmission and have done a lot of research while waiting for this to become available. Having done probably over 50 cumulative hours of research I'd say this is the closest thing to an AOD/AODE bible available.Currently I am in the middle of my rebuild but have performed removal/reinstall twice. (bought a used tranny for $125 so I could take my time on the rebuild). My experience so far is that it leaves little for me to figure out and the pictures are awesome. Most resources discuss the clutch packs and assemblies but leave the novice/home mechanic hoping they understand. With the pictures I can see exactly which assemblies come out together and how the clutch packs go together with much greater confidence.I don't regret buying the tech manuals and still review them as supporting documents but if I had it all to do over again I'd have saved $90 and bought this book only. (The shop/tech manuals run about $40 plus tax and shipping and you need to buy 2 of them to cover the design changes)In summary this is the only book you need to rebuild this very common tranny. It is well written and the detailed photos are a god send. Compared to the price I paid for the "official" shop manuals I would have gladly paid a lot more for this resource.

Very helpful for a rebuild

So I’ve finally finished my AOD/4r70w rebuild. It was my first time rebuilding a transmission of any kind too. I bought this book before hand and read it cover to cover a lot before buying any parts or beginning the work. At first read I thought the book had ample information and the picture quality was top notch! My goal was to rebuild an AOD trans with the upgraded 4r70w parts. This book documents how to do those upgrades but not very well.Once I actually began disassembly of the two transmissions I instantly realized that this book was missing a lot detail. Every step necessary was documented however specifics were lacking. An example would be: book states to remove c-clip. Problem: book fails to mention the c-clip is holding a hidden spring in place, spring shoots out. The book also sadly doesn’t contain a master parts illustrated break down diagram. The photos it does have are very high quality real photos of a real transmission but a master diagram would have been a nice addition.Overall I still recommend this book! You’ll still need to figure a few things out on your own, and you’ll definitely still use your smart phone to fill in some of the gaps the book has especially if your trying to modify/improve the trans and not just rebuild it to stock spec. Many of the upgrades the book recommends have since been superseded by even newer updates, you’ll have to use other sources to get the latest info on that.That said there is no way the first timer can do this rebuild without this book, there simply is not enough info on this subject matter on the Internet.

I have a 1965 Mustang with a B&M modified performance Ford AOD transmission that was installed around 2007 by a speed shop with a new drivetrain.Now, in 2017, the 302 Supercharged engine is out for a refresh and I wanted to know:- Where to find and identify the model of the transmission - I was hoping for a list of ID numbers showing date of manufacture, any revision, etc. Nothing was in the manual. I ended up crawling under the tranny (still in the car) and poking my cell phone around until I could get photos of the almost hidden ID numbers.- Since the engine is out, I wanted details on removing the torque converter and replacing the seal, then re-installing the converter.- How to adjust the shift levers to neutral, and each gear.- Issues related to setting up a 3rd party shifter like B&M.I didn't really find much but for a mechanic, this might still be useful. There are very few books out there on the AOD, so this appeared to be the best choice when I ordered it. It does provide diagrams on the various lines, how to setup circuits, etc.So, I will update this if I find the info on the last 3 items, but could not find info on the first two. It appears I might have to search gearhead forums to get answers, or take the ID numbers to a Ford dealer.

This is not an inch by inch book on how to assemble an AOD trans but it is the next best thingThe pictures are clear and precise and the text is straight to the pointIf you can't build a Gear box with the help of this book you might want to take up needle pointA very good guideThanks emma351
