Great.Book very informative.

I’ve now read this book three times. The first time I read it I highlighted important parts as I read, so when I go back about 2x a year when I feel like I’m starting to struggle, it’s a quick skim. I find the principles of this book to be spot on. Is our goal to get our kids to stop misbehaving or to raise empathetic humans who can self regulate in the future when they’re all on their own? The strategy in this book addresses both goals, but If you’re only looking at the short term goal then you might be frustrated by this book, but it boggles my mind that parents don’t also see they are responsible for creating good humans for the sake of their own children’s’ well-beings and that of society. Ultimately this book reminds you to treat your kids with respect and model the behavior you expect from them. It’s not spoiling to give a child in distress a hug, yes you need to address the bad behavior choice, but discipline is so much more effective once you gotten rid of the defensiveness and reactivity. I also felt there were great examples, and the concepts are simple in practice, just hard for some to reimagine a dated view of discipline. As a teacher, a lot of this is obvious because I do it with my students, but wasn’t applying at home. I have a 3 year old son and 6 year old daughter, and an infant, for reference, all with different personalities. The principles work with all kids, but I think harder for parents to implement if they themselves don’t have a strong sense of empathy and executive functioning skills. You have to be willing to open your mind, not just read a book that satisfies yourself urge to lay down the law and always be in control.

I just received this book yesterday, started it tonight, and have found difficulty in putting it down. It is a very easy-to-read, engaging and superb book. I feel as though the author is speaking directly to me; the language used in this book is easy to understand, honest, and real. I have already gained a new perspective on several topics relating to the guidance of my children. I like how there are many examples of situations that occur with different aged children, and how to effectively respond so that discipline is not only developmentally appropriate, but always compassionate and realistic. I highly recommend this book for parents and caregivers who are open to learning how to effectively discipline children, want to get put of auto-pilot parenting that involves reactionary discipline, and who want to change their lives and their children's childhood experiences for the better. I believe that the concepts that are presented are attainable and I truly believe that this book will improve many lives. Thanks to the authors for a great read. I feel that I should be paying much more money than I did for this kind of mentorship and therapeutic teaching!

I recommend this book hands down to any parent who feels overwhelmed or overstimulated most the time! As parents we want our kids to know how to cope with their emotions and learn to handle situations in appropriate manners, but it starts with us! And this book helped me to better handle my situations with my kids and how to teach them to do the same! The energy in my house has changed, including attitudes! Everyone has better understanding of each other!

This book was recommended by my daughter’s therapist a few years ago and also her new therapist. I did read it but it doesn’t apply to ASD dx, which I bought this book prior to her diagnosis

I will start off by saying I am a mother of four, very strong willed children. That is precisely why this book is invaluable to me. The concepts are life changing. If you are looking for a one size fits all, formulaic remedy for the complexities of raising a child then this book is not for you.The key concept everything in this book is centered around is connection.Connection's work is slow and steady.You can lovingly set limits. You can help build your child's executive functions that are crucial in learning how to self regulate, problem solve, show empathy etc.It all builds on the foundation of connection. And this takes intentionality and patience. This book teaches you how to get there and challenges your existing beliefs on what discipline means. Reading it felt like a light illuminating a foggy path.This book is very practical. My husband and I have been building on this approach for years now and while we see the beauty and upward trend of progress overall, there are days that end in tears, days that are hard, seasons where we feel like we have to reset and start again. Because we are human. This book honors what it means to be human.If you want to learn how to walk WITH your child in life, this book is for you.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s an easy read for a busy parent and the principles are straightforward and easy to apply. Highly recommend if you have kids and are interested in how their brain works.
