happy to find another vegetarian omega-3 option
I was pleased to discover yet another brand of omega-3 fatty acid supplement that's suitable for vegans and vegetarians. I'd been taking Ovega-3, and I like those a lot, but I decided to try a bottle of these so I could compare. These (veggie) gelcaps from Deva are nice. They're small, though, so you would have to take two of them to get the same levels of DHA and EPA that are in Ovega. I like that these contain DHA and EPA (as opposed to ALA), because those are the active forms in the body; your body's conversion of ALA to either EPA or DHA is inefficient, at best. It's best to take DHA and EPA directly. (EPA and DHA are synthesized by algae; the only reason they're present in fish is because fish eat the algae. So the EPA and DHA here come directly from the plant source.)These do not need to be refrigerated. They don't have any smell or aftertaste. They are available from a variety of online stores -- it's generally a good thing when a supplement is widely distributed as it makes me feel like the manufacturer is more trustworthy and reliable. (I did buy these from Amazon, though, but only after investigating the brand.)In general, I have found that omega-3 supplements, in combination with diet (especially eliminating refined carbohydrates) and exercise, are great at lowering triglycerides, specifically. So if you have had a high total cholesterol reading because of your triglycerides, this is one option to consider. (Switching to whole grains is another.)In the end, I find these very similar to the ones from Ovega, with the exception that you would need to take two to get a comparable dose of essential fatty acids. However, if you want smaller pills to swallow, these might be better. I have been happy with these and would definitely consider buying them again.

clean, vegan source of DHA-EPA with no carrageenan in the capsule
I found out about the benefits of taking DHA-EPA (long-chain omega-3s) through Dr. Gregor’s website, NutritionFacts.org. In summary, Dr. Gregor recommends taking 250 mg a day to preserve brain function, particularly as we age (based on the results from the Framington study). It may be particularly important for vegans since they don’t eat fish, and fish is a source of DHA-EPA. Apparently though, the reason it is in fish is because the fish eat algae, so it makes sense just to get it from the algae directly if you prefer not to eat fish. Here are the reasons I chose this particular supplement:• It is vegan (including the capsule).• The capsule is made from cellulose (no carrageenan, which I try to avoid because of health concerns).• The algae (from which the DHA-EPA is derived) is grown outside the ocean in clean, controlled water.I have noticed no negative side effects from taking this supplement. The capsules do have a “fishy” sort of smell if you sniff them, but this doesn’t bother me and I have never noticed a fishy taste or fishy burps later. I figure the algae just smells fishy and it’s unavoidable. I’d much rather it be natural than to have some sort of artificial flavor or scent added to try to mask it. Usually those things just make it more unpleasant anyway. It is impossible for me to measure the positive effects of taking this supplement, but I found the information shared by Dr. Gregor very convincing and recommend checking out his website for more information. I plan to take this supplement for as long as I am able to.

Omega 3 supplements can be unsafe for already healthy people
Took a while to figure out these pills were causing excess bleeding. Omega 3 supplements might be helpful for those on a poor diet, but it seems to do more harm than good for a mostly whole foods vegan with good bloodwork. They should have a prominent warning about thinning blood too much.

Great alternative to using actual fish oil!
Seems to be a good brand. My only concern is the fishy taste which lasts for an hour or so intermittently. Easy to swallow, no abdominal upset. Uncertain if these really provide noticeable energy increase or are effective in the long-term.

Color
I recently freaked out that I got an inauthentic order because the pills were a lot darker than they usually are as I've ordered this quite a few times. I emailed the company and they responded within the hour stating that"The light amber color (as seen in pictures) is OK and per specs. The algae this oil is derived from produces a range of color from light yellow to amber color naturally, which is beyond our control. Some red color sedimentation that may be visible in some batches is also from the microalgae itself and harmless. Please note that these microalgae oils are not molecularly distilled as common fish oils are and their color/appearance/smell inconsistencies from batch to batch is considered normal."Great to know if anyone else gets darker colored pills! Amazon is also clearly listed as an authentic seller on their website which is great to know since not many companies (especially with beauty products) make this clear. These will be forever my go to DHA/EPA supplement. They're great!

100% relief from eczema!
I've continued to use this omega-3 supplement for years after it totally cleared a chronic eczema condition. I appreciate the fact that you can see, smell & briefly taste the earthy & real active ingredient inside the capsule (algae). I prefer this over the other capsule versions that disguise what's inside with dark coloring and tightly sealed no-smell/taste capsules. Since the product description doesn't highlight the absence of carrageenan, I asked and the company confirmed that this controversial ingredient is not in this product. They also informed me that a new higher potency once-a-day version would be available in 2021. Unfortunately for me, the new version's side effect was "system overload" (gas and skin eruptions). So, I plan to stick with what is working for me and will continue using the smaller twice-a-day capsule version. Hopefully, Deva will continue to offer it as a Subscribe & Save item at Amazon!
