Q: Is this too small to place inside a fireplace to give the effect of a fire?

No. I have 2 side-by-side in my fireplace. Placed them on the rod-iron log holder, which is elevated. Looks great!!

Q: Does anybody else's make a loud motor sound?

mine was making that clicking noise. unscrew the bottom and check the inside - there is a plastic sheet. the clicking noise was the spinning thing hitting the plastic sheet which either was not put in right on its little track or was just warped enough that the spinning things were hitting it. unscrew the bottom and take the plastic sheet out and turn it the other way, slide it into its track and there no more noise!

Q: About how long do the batteries last?

About 3 to 4 weeks when using name brand batteries. The intensity of the flame begins to diminish as the batteries are dying.
