Informative and enjoyable read

Once again, Captivating History puts together a fact filled easy to read history. The story of the Pilgrims journey is amazing. One wonders if those of us alive today could have endured the hardships these people did in their lives. Although really just a ship, the roll of the Mayflower was seemingly life saving on many occasions during the trip.I was surprised to hear that although the trip was primarily planned by the Pilgrims as a means for religious freedom in the "New World", there were other passengers booked on board so the owners could make a profit or at least brake even. They all shared the desire for freedom and opportunity. Although not originally planned, one of the major impacts of their circumstances and the need to work together was The Mayflower Compact, a document unique to the times and a major influence on the framers of the Constitution. This book does a good job of balancing and reflecting the positive and negative impacts of Europeans and Native Americans. As always, the reader must be careful not to compare the moral/politic/ethnic standards of 1620 to 2020. The story of Tisquantum, better known as Squanto, the Native American who is primarily responsible for the Pilgrims survival is fascinating. Most readers will enjoy this book and wonder why history isn't taught like this in school..

good book

Short and to the point. Written very well. You learn a lot of interesting facts and the author does a good job of expressing the hopes and fears of the people aboard.

A real historical page-turner

Once again, this Captivating History series hits the mark. I had known almost nothing about the Mayflower voyage (or forgotten most of what I'd learned in school...), but this book gave all the fascinating details of the back story and founding of Plymouth colony. And I was glad there were illustrations. The only omission I can mention is that there was nothing about that mouse on the ship who single-pawed saved the day when the ship was in danger.

A quick and succinct history

I’ve been ill and I love reading about American history. Because of my illness I have been unable to concentrate on what I am reading. This was simple, concise, and well documented without personal prejudice. Excellent for junior high ages or for someone just looking for the Reader’s Digest version.

Great historical read

Refreshing and entertaining coverage of the Mayflower's voyage, hardships and the people who determined to have religious freedom even at the expense of facing the unknown and death.

Now for the rest of the story....

Strongly suggested reading. Should be required reading for middle school or high school history classes. Artfully written and easily read, this guide provides the real background of the people we came to know as Pilgrims. Just who was William Bradford? Myles Standish? What about"Squanto" and the other Native Americans that helped make Thanksgiving possible?

Good Book

Concise and well written, but not as good as Nathaniel Philbrick's book (but I don't think it was written to compete against it). I enjoyed reading it, especially about the journey across the Atlantic.
