Such a great book

This book is great. It has so much good advice, that probably most people are scared to say out loud. It also has practical steps. But like with all of these things, you have to take the action yourself. I highly recommend this book. It's a shame I couldn't find a paperback anyway, I'd buy this as a gift for birthdays.

A difficult but profound book

A very well structured and well-written book. The author covers difficult and controversial areas of human lives. Relationships. Children. Families. Money. Work. Identity. Social conditioning. Parents. Religion. Politics. Talk about treading in a minefield. The author is courageous to tackle these areas and I can understand why so many people find this a very difficult read. Note there is a very difficult path to be trod between freedom and loneliness. I personally think it is very difficult to be both free and in a relationship, although it is possible to achieve a certain level of freedom in a relationship - whether that will be enough freedom or not will depend on the individual.Although this book was written many years ago, it is all still relevant. To become aware of social and familial pressure, governmental pressure, the pressure to "keep up with the Joneses", these all impact on our freedom. The intellectual and emotional traps are alive and well. While mostly a strong and insightful book, the section on "The treadmill trap" is one of the weaker sections. One of the traps I see most often holding people back is they simply know of no other way to earn income other than by turning up to an office and taking a salary. For this simple reason alone many will never escape the "unfree world", and are often resigned to what Thoreau called "lives of quiet desperation". The main thrust of the advice here seems to be "freelance". As a contract writer of many years experience I know that has both pros and cons. I personally believe building a portfolio career, where you combine a main freelance income with various side incomes and casual work is a robust solutions to the treadmill trap. Passive income is important to create, but I don't think that is mentioned in the book at all.All in all I think this is a very good and important read. Even if you decide in the end that the approaches in the book are not for you, you will at least be aware of the traps, and fall into them willingly.

The book makes compelling reading for those holding libertarian views and seek useful supporting arguments

An interesting and well written book on the subject of how to live a self centred life with utter disregard for societal responsibility. The book makes compelling reading for those holding libertarian views and seek useful supporting arguments. My guessess it would receive five stars rating by many libertarians. The author presents his subject in a comprehensive and fully justifiable way those who care about the wellbeing of the less advantaged, it portrays a valuable lesson in how a damaging and disconcerting philosophy can be made justifiable with great conviction. As someone in the latter group, I struggled to read the discomforting elements in parts of this book and have consequently awarded three stars.
