DRAMATIC MOOD LIGHTING
These fountain pumps are great for adding a depth of drama and mood to your fountain display. They do not work for all applications. They work best when in deeper water that will completely cover the unit. They are a powerful little pump that I have in both a deep bird bath and in my dogs little play pool. It did not work well in my shallower bird baths. The pumps do not have the heavier duty cording that is on my older fountain pumps.....but for the price they work very well in my applications. In the deep bird bath application it is next to sign I have lighted at night that says....You are in our prayers UKRAINE.....and with the way the water switches over constantly between blue and green it has a very somber effect. In the doggie pool application I run the cord through a fat PVC pipe to the plug outlet on my patio that the cord is tucked into so the dogs can't chew it up. The dogs love the pool lit up at night and the pump is plenty powerful to keep their water clean and cool. We just have to clean the dog hairs off the front of the water intake a few times a day. The pump is easy enough to take apart to clean stuff out of the inside of it as neccessary. I bought 4 of them, because at this price it was nice to have back ups just in case. The birds are actually messier than the dogs and it's nice to have extra pumps to rotate through as I change out the water and clean up the pool or bird bath. We love these lighted pumps. We've been using some form of fountain pumps for the past 10 years in different applications and these are working fine for us now. But we still keep one of the old style fountain pumps in our shallower bird baths for the hummingbirds to use. I highly recommend these as the lights are a special benefit to the pumps.

Great pump- to add a DIY filter:
I was installing a little 35 gallon pond on a small budget, so I thought I'd give this pump a shot. After a month of constant use, I'm still very happy with it.Some details I feel could be clearer in the listing: the intake for the pump is at the front circular dial where the flow is adjusted, so you can't feed from a filter unit via a tube into the pump. What I figured out quickly however, is that it's very easy, effective, and inexpensive to get a roll of aquarium filter medium and cut it into small rectangles (about 5 x 6"), wrap it around the front intake, and hold it in place with a rubber band. This filters the water as it's sucked in, so it keeps the pump from getting clogged up with debris. Also way cheaper than buying some separate filter unit, or a combo pump/filter.The output is pretty good, but didn't quite get me to that perfect soothing splashing water sound when placed at the bottom of my 15" deep pond. What's awesome however, is that the output is the exact perfect size to use one of my reusable silicone drinking straws (slightly large, the "smoothie" size) to extend the output a little higher.I do wish that the lights had different settings to manipulate, but at this price I'm not complaining. It absolutely meets my needs for a super low price. I should also note that I'm not treating the water with any chemicals, just barley straw, and even in the hot South Carolina summer in a natural pond this pump is keeping up just fine.

Good pump. Using it in an outside mini goldfish pond/cast iron bathtub pond
The light on this pump is minimal. I have the light in a cave in my outside cast iron bath tub pond and it gives it an erry illumination but nothing dramatic. I put a small plastic crate like box (like strawberries might come in--must have openings to allow water to flow through) over the input side of the pump (cut hole to fit over) with polyester batting (like used in quilting) covering over the outside of the box. Water is pulled through the batting by the pump and the debri is collected in the batting. The cage/create creates an area of water after the batting to prevent over stressing the pump. I just use a couple of elastics to hold it on but you could get more fancy about it. This set up will clear up cloudy water very quickly and keep the water very clear in a small pond the size of my cast iron bath tub. My pond has two koi, two goldfish, 2 algae eaters, 3 negrate snails and usually 6 small to medium frogs in it. I take the basket/batting off the pump like once a month and rinse it in a bucket of the water taken from the pond (to keep the good bacteria) and put the pump/cage/batting set up back after. Very easy way to get and maintain clear water. good pump for this.

Failed after 45 days
This nice little pump worked great for 1.5 month, then started sputtering. After a thorough cleaning, it started up again only to completely fail after 24 hours. Tried to clear again, place in a clear batch of water, but again seized up after just a few minutes. I'll try another pump, so hopefully this was an isolate incident.
