This is an “auto-return” yo-yo so it bounces very easily back up

IT DOES return automatically, but not immediately. You need to wait for the yo-yo to slow down a bit, and the clutch within the yo-yo will disengage, and THEN the yo-yo will return. The faster the yo-yo spins, the longer you will have to wait for it to slow down enough to auto-return. If you're able to throw the yo-yo more slowly (a slower spin), the clutch will disengage more quickly, and the yo-yo will return sooner.
